GEARING UP (Beginner Motorcycle Training)

If you want to learn to ride a motorcycle, we will teach you the best methods to control your bike using our nationally accredited and provincially licensed training program. We are Alberta's most established and largest motorcycle training provider. The Alberta Safety Council has trained over 25,000 students in Alberta and the Northwest Territories since 1974 and we train almost 2000 students annually during the motorcycle training season, which runs from April to September

Gearing Up - Beginner Motorcycle Riders Course (2.5 days, $450)
We integrate instructor-led classroom learning with extensive practical training. During your training in our "Gearing Up" course we supply the motorcycles. Tuition tax credit is available to all students who attend this basic course. This course is the most proven and recognized training method in Canada.
We will take you through all the basics (80% riding practice and 20% classroom):
- Motorcycle controls
- Starting the engine
- Clutch operation
- Balance and slow-speed control
- Shifting gears
- Higher-speed control
- Cornering techniques
- Effective braking control
- Collision avoidance strategies
Rider Requirements:
Although we provide the motorcycles for Gearing Up, students are required to bring their own riding gear which includes:
- An approved motorcycle helmet (DOT, Snell)
- Full fingered leather gloves
- Sturdy jacket and pants (leather, denim (at a minimum), or specialized riding gear)
- Eye protection (eyeglasses, sunglasses, visor or face shield on helmet)
- Leather boots that cover the ankle bone
Gearing Up - Refresher Motorcycle Riders Course
The Gearing Up Refresher course is designed to give motorcyclists with riding experience the opportunity to brush up on skills already learned in a previously taken Gearing Up program, especially after a winter off. Experienced Motorcyclists who have no formal training may also benefit from the opportunity to take a short program to improve their existing riding skills.

Take both Gearing Up and Street Skills** in the same year, and save $50.
**You must have a Class 6 license and your own motorcycle for the Street Skills portion.

During motorcycle training season (April to September), courses in Edmonton are offered in three different sessions each week with the following hours:

CHOICE 1: MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY
- Monday & Tuesday: 8:00am to 5:30pm
- Wednesday: 8:00am to 1:00pm
CHOICE 2: WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY
- Wednesday: 2:00pm to 7:00pm
- Thursday: 8:00am to 5:15pm
- Friday: 8:00am to 5:00pm
CHOICE 3: FRIDAY TO SUNDAY
- Friday: 6:00pm to 9:30pm
- Saturday & Sunday: 8:00am to 5:30pm
CHOICE 4: IF WE HAVE ENOUGH DEMAND FOR AN EVENING COURSE, CLASS WOULD BE OVER A 2-WEEK PERIOD AS FOLLOWS
WEEK 1
- Tuesday: 6:00pm to 9:30pm
- Wednesday & Thursday: 6:30pm to 9:30pm
WEEK 2
- Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 6:30pm to 9:30pm
